Classical Overview of Ājñā

Ājñā, positioned between the eyebrows (bhrūmadhya) and extending back to the pineal gland, is the supreme command center of Yogic metaphysics. It is here that the solar (piṅgalā) and lunar (iḍā) energetic streams unite into the single central channel (suṣumnā), dissolving the duality of subject and object.

The Two Petals: Ha and Kṣa

Unlike the lower chakras with numerous petals, Ajna possesses only two pure white or silvery petals. These are inscribed with the syllables Haṁ (representing solar breath and Shiva) and Kṣaṁ (representing lunar breath and Shakti), enclosing the whole Sanskrit alphabet from A to Kṣa.

Associated Locks (Bandha) & Mudrās

Śāmbhavī Mudrā & Mahā Vedha

In classical Tantra, the locking of consciousness into Ājñā is achieved via Śāmbhavī Mudrā (steady internal fixation on the eyebrow center with eyelids partially closed). When combined with Mahā Vedha (the Piercing Lock), the vital prana pierces the Rudra Granthi (the psychic knot of subtle mental attachment) and surges into the cranial vertex.

Classical Siddhis & Mental Sovereignty (Manas Siddhi)

According to the Ṣaṭ-Cakra-Nirūpaṇa (Verse 34) and Śiva Saṁhitā (5.96–102):

  1. Mastery over the Mind (Manas-Jaya): The dualistic fluctuating mental waves (citta-vṛttis) subside entirely into unbroken, luminous stillness.
  2. Sarvajñatva (Omniscient Perception): The subtle veil separating individual awareness from cosmic intelligence is dissolved.
  3. Parakāya Praveśa: The capacity to project subtle consciousness beyond the physical container.
  4. Dissolution of Sañcita Karma: The seeds of past accumulated karmas are burned in the fire of non-dual wisdom (jñānāgni).

Historical vs. Modern Perspectives

Classical Tantric Context:

Ājñā signifies 'command' or 'authority'—the point where the disciple receives the inner directive (ādeśa) from the supreme Guru within.

Contemporary Psychological Context:

Correlated in contemporary neuroscience and psychology with executive cognitive function, metacognition, pattern recognition, and imaginative foresight.
